The announcement that the practical driving test is going to be made more challenging for learner drivers, in a bid to make it reflect realistic driving conditions and give the sat nav generation an opportunity to learn to drive independently, has been welcomed by Swinton Car Insurance.
A survey of 1200 Swinton customers reveals that 66% of new drivers don't feel ready for the roads, and a shocking 82% don't know their way around their neighbourhood. In addition, 72% of drivers get lost within their first week of driving and 11% experience minor accidents as a result of not knowing where they're going.
The amends to the existing test will be implemented from the 4th October, and include a 10 minute drive without the examiner dictating directions, with the aim of improving motorist's navigational skills. From the same date, the Driving Standards Agency will no longer publish details of test routes, meaning new motorists taking their tests can't take the easy route and just learn the test route to pass.
Swinton, the UK's leading Car Insurance provider, is keen to remind motorists of the importance in preparing for your driving test, as the skills learnt during this time will help motorists cope on the roads for years to come.
Steve Chelton, insurance manager at Swinton Insurance said, "These changes to the driving test mean motorists will be able to get a better idea of what everyday life behind the wheel is like, not rely as heavily on instructors and gain the ability to navigate themselves."
He added, "In learning how to drive independently, motorists will have more time to focus on the road and not get distracted, ultimately minimising the chance of an accident."
